New Years Day Run 2012

Ten riders took advantage of the mild New Year's weather to take part in the run which started at Blackberries in Bampton with coffee, and a natter. I am sure that the numbers would have been more if family commitments had not prevented many from attending.

Rod Farr led us on a splendid run over the hills and through floods to lunch at The Bell at Chittlehamton where we all went our separate ways.

It was just a short run and I am glad to able to report that there where no breakdowns or other mishaps.

We were all glad it wasn't like last year! Lets hope it continues!

We are now all looking forward to the next run on March 11th which starts at The Anchor, Exebridge gathering at 10.30 for 11.00.

The Christmas Bash 2011

Our section of the VMCC met for the annual Christmas Dinner on December 10th at the Fox & Hounds at Eggesford. Around 43 people attended, including partners & friends.

Things didn't quite go to plan! On arrival it was a surprise & disappointment to find that we didn't have the room to ourselves as had been promised, there were two other parties sharing it. Ray had specifically asked for sole use because of the trophy awards & the Chairman's review of the year. The management have since said that for sole use you have to have a booking for over 50 people.

The meal was slightly unusual too & has recieved mixed comments. Because of the noise levels in the room the review of the year had to be abandoned & the trophies were given out as best they could. Here are the photos of some of the award winners.

Despite the problems it was great to see everyone on the night & I think we all had a good catch up. So thanks to all who attended & lets hope for a trouble free night next year!

GUY FAWKS RUN.

Twenty-eight riders took advantage of the unexpectedly fine weather to take part in the final run of the year.
Starting at the Corn Dolly in South Molton the run took us through Twitchen and up over Exmoor, passing White Post and crossing Hawkridge and East Anstey Common. Crossing over the Link road via the bridge at Hares Down the road leads past the Log Cabin Cafe and on to Chulmleigh where we had lunch at the Red Lion Hotel.
Whilst we had no mechanical breakdowns we did have a serious system failure. Two men left their posts before the tail end marshals arrived. Both were at vital check points which caused many of the riders to travel miles from the route and arrive at the lunch stop over half an hour late. The culprits then compounded the crime by not telling subseqent markers what they had done. This meant some riders
waiting around for ages. Despite these problems everyone seemed to enjoy the run and the good weather.

Club night Oct. 20th

Guest speaker this night was a well known face to us all, usually with a camera pointing at us to record our embarrassing and awkward or humourous moments, yes it was Merv Pearce.
Mervyn was there at the pub even before I arrived with Ray to give him a hand to set up. There was a slight hiccup as the pub was double booked so our room upstairs was not available, however we all ( near 30 of us ), managed. Merv split everyone up into 5 teams and circulated 5 boards, 3 had photos and 2 objects to be identified, all this took some 40 minutes and lead to a lot of head scratching. Some of the photos brought back good memories. When the boards had been marked and prizes awarded, Merv showed us a 30 minute film he took of our Autumn run, as usual with his filming, there were some action shots. This was a cracking evening, thanks must go to Merv for the hard work putting it all together, he of course then had a long 2 hour run home.
Next meet is November 6th for the Guy Fawkes run, starts at the Corn Dolly in South Molton, don't miss this our last run of the year, ( where has the year gone eh! ), it's only a half day so see you there.

Autumn run October 9th 2011

25 riders and 2 passengers braved the mist and drizzle to arrive at Den and Sandras to sample the bacon, sausage and egg rolls that Sandra and her team have become famous for supplying to all who attend this run. Brian, who organises this run every year, fell off a ladder last week and so could not lead, I was asked to take over which is what happened, I asked Ray to ride just behind me to appoint the markers so that I could concentrate on the route and this he did, thanks Ray. Keith and Ian agreed to be rear marshals so off we went.

The route passed over the hills to the picturesque bridge at Bickleigh, then on to Silverton and Hele before crossing the old A38 and on through Talaton. Lunch stop was at The New Fountain Inn in Whimple where an excellent meal was served. 5 of us guessed the highway code questions correctly and since I had to take over running this element, I had to withdraw and find 4 more questions for the remaining 4 riders. 3 passed this element so another 4 questions were posed which 2 riders passed, at this point a draw was called else I was going to be there all afternoon, so well done to Steve and Mervyn. Ray announced the winners of the most like to take home bikes and we were ready once again for the off.

The run took us out on to the old A30 briefly then on to the Fairmile road before riding through the centre of Ottery. West hill was visited next and Newton Poppleford before turning down for a wonderful run along the Budleigh Salterton seafront where the people were walking around in shorts and T shirts!. From here we rode on into Exmouth where we parked up on the sea front where we always attract a lot of attention whilst eating our ice creams.

Thanks are due to Brian for the route and to Shirley who I know will have helped with the setting of the questions, to Ray, Keith and Ian and of course to Den and Sandra and team of helpers for the wonderful breakfast treats.

At the lunchtime stop, a rider from Dorset joined us so we were at 26 at the finish, Den managed the whole route this year and Mervyn now knows where to put his camera for safety!.

Run to Haynes Motor Museum

Six riders who were foolish enough to believe the weather forcasters when they said that Sunday would be " dry with the slight chance of a shower" met at J27 on Sunday Sept. 25th at 9.30am.

The plan was to meet with some members from the Somerset section for a trip to The Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford. http://www.haynesmotormuseum.com/

One of the Somerset boys had bike trouble on the way so it was arranged to meet them at the destination.

We set off in good spirits because Ray had told us that the present rain was a "clearing-up" shower. Then we made our way through persistant rain over the Blackdown Hills to Sparkford.

Arriving in the car park, in rain that was now nearly horizontal in the strong wind, we were met by one member from Somerset. The others, about ten in all came in shortly after.

There are a geat many interesting and exotic cars and bikes on display in the museum all in beautiful

condition. I would like to have stayed longer but with my feet squelching about in my boots and a hundred mile ride home we left after about two hours.

The ride home was achieved in the dry but with a strong wind blowing in our faces.

Thanks to Ray for guiding us which he is good at, but don't listen to his weather predictions, which he is rubbish at!

Club night Sept. 15th. 2011

Now next month, Merv is coming all the way up from Cornwall to give us a presentation, so please can we have a good turn out for that?, it's on October 20th. see you there.

Mystery run Sept. 11th 2011

Woody and I were unavailable for this run but I have had briefings from Ray and Merv so here's how it went. 14 riders set off from the railway station at Okehampton on a day that was supposed to have very bad weather but turned out to be quite good. Ian led the group around the back of Launceston to arrive at Daidstowe by about 11.20, the drop off system was used as the run could get quite strung out. Nice to see Alan in the Morgan again and a rider on his first run with the club, John from Bude on his Suzuki. 8 Cornish riders were waiting at the Museum and a cuppa and biscuits were enjoyed following a quick tour of a very interesting Museum. All 23 set off on a nice rural trip around Bodmin moor past Crowdy etc to arrive at the lunch stop at Otterham cafe, after a good meal everyone set off on their own way home. The only rain was during the lunch stop so this did not affect anyone too much. Keith had to ride his Bonnie as his T100 wouldn't run properley but I am told it is now ok. If anyone can E mail me photos I will post them seperately. Ray has asked me to thank Merv for organising the Cornish end of the run and Ian for leading the group to Davidstowe. Next run is the Autumn run from Sandra and Den's on October 9th, hope to see you there.

Girder fork run Aug 28th 2011

13 riders assembled at 'The Mitre' in Witheridge for this girder only run. It was nice to have support from Mike Williams a committee member from the Dartmoor section, also to see the Harley and Morgan on the run. Bill was our leader for the day despite having some problems with his usually trusty Norton, and Brian took on the tail end role for the day. We had a great send off from the Mitre and took the road back towards Tiverton. The route then turned back towards South Molton and ended the morning at Chittlehampton for a very nice lunch, some problems were encountered but all arrived safely. Brians Triumph won the cup having been selected by our hostess. Rain showers gave us a bit of trouble in the morning and did threaten the afternoon but it just got better and all arrived at Winkleigh in the dry. Thanks to the organisers, the Mitre and the Bell inn for looking after us well, also a mention to some club members who turned up to see us off, finally a personal thanks to Ray who entrusted his Ariel to me so that I could join this run even if I wasn't allowed to start it !.

Evening meet Chittlehampton 22nd Aug 2011

Here are 13 members drinking their lemonade at the Bell inn Chittlehampton last evening having ridden from their respective homes for a meet and chat. A good ride out in good weather which was a change considering that the previous 2 ride outs have been very wet. Steve G had a chance to ride a Triumph TR6 out and a Triumph T90 back ( both mine ) unfortunately he did not beg me to sell them both to him on return!. A good turn out of 26 at the Black cat for the start of the run included Bob Mitchell a visitor from Kent on his Enfield V twin ( 1300cc I think ), and the 500cc Ariel chair outfit of Mike Spillar. Following him was quite an experience as the rider and passenger leant into and out of each corner. Steve and Sue turned up on the Trike which Steve has made up based on a Honda Goldwing. This was the first long run that Steve had undertaken since the accident to his back, he was unsure at first whether he would be able to do the run. Fred and team made everyone welcome with cups of tea and coffee plus toast before the run set off, many thanks folks!. Ray and I set the run to encompass much of the route which was aborted in June due to bad weather, so we were able to give the lunchtime business back to the restaurant. The route was back through Tiverton, Halberton and Willand then on to Wellington where we climbed up on to the spine of the Blackdown hills before dropping down to the A303 which had to be crossed before arriving at the lunch stop near Chard. 19 people sat down for a choice of menu which was very good.
The afternoon saw the run cross the A303 again and make its way back towards Wellington where the finish was at the Chelston gardens nursing home where they are always very pleased to see us, plying us with sausage rolls and muffins!. Steve did manage to do the whole run riding at the helm which was a great achievment-he was very pleased with himself as were we all, well done mate!. There were no breakdowns for Pete or myself to deal with and Ray did a great job at the front, everyone said they enjoyed the route and the weather was kind so a great days riding for us all.

Evening meet 3 Tuns July 18th 2011

This run turned out to be another soggy one!, only 4 intrepid, brave & adventurous riders, ( all from Tiverton ), turned up. We did however have a good old chinwag before getting our heads down for the return journey home, lets just hope that the last of our planned evening meets in August gives us better weather.

This run started in Bampton at the Blackberries, a good number and variety of machines turned up, it was good to see Alan with the Morgan. Chris had his gearbox out so had to borrow a japanese m/bike for the day which proved a problem for him!.
The run was very good, a stop was made at Horner and here Chris had a fuel problem on his borrowed bike, we also set off without 2 riders due to a mix up on numbers coming out of the car park so apologies had to be made for that. Chris came to a stop a few miles after Horner and so it was left to Maurice to lead the run back to Brendas for the usual excellent feast to finish the day.
Chris' BMW is now back on the road so he is back in action and Mike has shown him where the petrol goes in his borrowed bike.

Girder fork run June 26th 2011

This extra girder fork run started at Winkleigh with some 9 machines taking part, sadly the number of girders is on the decline but I understand that all who went enjoyed the run. I have no further information on the run itself but will try to cover the next girder run in August in more detail.

Unfortunately, the day dawned with pouring rain and more to come, Ray ( our secretary ) and myself set out to the start in the car!!, we were sure that no-one would be brave enough to turn up but there was Maurice with his trusty BMW !, he said he was just trying out his new screen !. He had travelled down the A361 link road from Barnstaple but he was not going back that way!, so he set off back via the A377. The lunch stop was a good one so they were informed that we would not be coming but we would turn up at a future run date.

Scrumpy run 2011

May 8th this year saw our annual

scrumpy run form up at Ilfracombe

in good weather with over 50 riders

attending. There was the usual interest from holidaymakers who

were keen to tell us what bikes they

used to have, ( sadly, none of them

still had these bikes in the back of their garages! ).

The run was enjoyed by all with no major breakdowns reported. Maurice had added a few miles in the afternoon and this seems to have stopped the mad dash back to the start seen on previous scrumpy runs. The Mayor was introduced by Chris and he did his choosing of the bike he favoured best. Prizes were then awarded before we all went back to the theatre cafe for a rather nice meal and drinks. Thanks to all who helped to make this another very enjoyable scrumpy.

Sundays April fools run saw 27 riders arrive at the Corn Dolly in South Molton in good weather for a very good run over parts of Exmoor and North Devon to arrive at the Woody Bay station for lunch and dispersal.

This run was as usual organised by John Denny, and of course there was a ford to be navigated, ( only one this time ), one rider stopped in the ford which, considering the depth in the middle, was quite surprising.

Brian and Lee brought up the rear, this was Lee's first time in the role, they had a little work to do but not to onerous.

Many riders admitted they had seen parts of the moor they had not seen before, I must admit that this was my observation also, even Merv had not been on some of the lanes.

The run finished at Woody bay station so that riders could take advantage of the train ride if they wanted, John rightly felt that this stop would be in support of the railway following the excellent talk given recently at our club night.

All in all a very enjoyable run, thanks to John for the route and for leading, and to Brian and Lee for bringing up the rear.

The Spring Run part 2

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear but with a cold wind blowing from the north. Twenty-seven riders with cold fingers gathered at Whiddon Down services for Ray's Spring Run deep into Dartmoor. Among them was Mike Jennings and his wife from Torquay riding his lovely BMW R100S and Steib sidecar.

Travelling first towards Mortonhampstead we turned left at Easton and climbed steeply up to a high ridge of moorland, giving a fine view of Chagford. Dropping down into Mortonhampstead we turned abruply left and up again. This time to Mardon Down where we stopped to admire the view.

Then it was left onto the B3212 then right onto the B3193 for a grand ride along by the river till we turned right into Bovey Tracey for the lunch stop.

The afternoon route went past Haytor and through Widecombe In The Moor, Dartmeet, Two Bridges, Postbridge, Chagford and back to the start at Whiddon Down.

I would like to say that everyone had a trouble free ride. But alas it was not so. John Trible had his front brake cable fail which resulted in a fall when forced to stop suddenly by an unpredictable motorist and John Anstead had to return home from the lunch stop with a mysterious misfire.

Gordon became another casualty when his machine suddenly died. As you all know Triumphs very seldom give trouble and for one to just stop is almost unheard of. He first checked the spark - OK, then set about stripping the carb and carefully cleaned it out, but found nothing. After reassembling it he kicked it over and it roared into life. Must have been all that radon gas on the moor!

The Spring Run

Spring run March 13th

Only a week to go to the spring run folks, get your bikes out and meet us at the Little Chef Whidden down, Sunday March 13th, 10.30 for 11.00 start, its not a long run and lunch will be in Bovey, take this chance to show us your new bikes or work you have done over the winter....see you there. Oh and don't forget the AGM Thursday March 17th 20.00 in the Town Arms South Molton come and take part, open to all members.

THE DEVON SECTION DINNER

This years dinner was held at the club-night venue, the Town Arms, South Molton.

Our fears that the room might be too small to accomodate the 38 people who booked proved to be unfounded. It was cosy but fine. The meal provided was good value for money, and was popular with dog owners because the quantity of meat provided defeated most diners.

This years awards went to he following:

Jean's Trophy for most points on a Pre-war machine went to Ray Rowcliffe.

Lee Plain won the Ron Ley Cup for the Best Effort on the Scrumpy Run and the Thelbridge Trophy for the Best Girder-fork bike on the Autumn run.

The Woodman Shield for knowledge of the highway code was won by Rodney Hann.

The Reed Motors Tankard for Best Tele-fork Bike on the Autumn run went to Brian Cordy.

Ian Bryant was awarded the Les Soper Tankard for most points on a Non-British machine.

The VMCC Cup for most points on a Post-war Machine was won by Brian Cordy.

Maurice Ley was presented with the Scrumpy Run Shield and the Ilfracombe Shield which he won at this years Scrumpy Run.

There were plenty of prizes for the raffle and one persons luck was really in that night. I am still waiting to hear if he won the National Lottery as well! I thought it was a very good night and hope everyone else enjoyed it too. A good end to a successful club year.

The geust speaker for January's club night is someone from Quinces Honey Farm,which as you know is based in South Molton. Please come and support the club on what I am sure will be another interesting evening.

The next run is on New years day, starting at Witheridge. I hope to see you there. If not to ride then for a coffee and a chat and to see off the brave souls who have ridden there bikes.

Guy Fawkes Run

On the first cold morning of the winter 21 riders gathered for coffee and a warm-up at The Corn Dolly in South Molton for the start of the Guy Fawkes run.

Although cold, we set off in sunshine through lanes that were in places strewn with fallen leaves. Our route took us through the hamlet of Twitchen and up onto Exmoor where the roads were mostly dry.

On good wide roads with splendid views we rode along Twitchen Ridge to White Post, then turned left over Hawkridge Plain to Five Cross Way. We then turned south to cross the North Devon Link road via the bridge at Hares Down, then on past the "Log Cabin" and south west to Chulmleigh for lunch at The Red Lion.

We were pleased to welcome a new member, John Stanley, on his first run with the club. John rode his 1974 BMW because his Triumph, being a Triumph, was off the road.

There were no mishaps on route but the tail of the run had a little excitement, became separated from the main run when two runaway horses bolted out of a farmyard into the road in front of them. But our gallant boys rounded them up and returned them to a grateful farmer.

At one point Ray had a little engine trouble which he thought might be a sticking valve but that passed and he got home safely.

There are no more "Runs" now until the New Years Day run which starts at Witheridge. Brave hearts and warm clothes are required for this run.

October Club Night

The next club night is on October 21st. We have a special speaker, Ian Cowling. He is coming to give us an illustrated talk on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. It should be very interesting as this is a very popular subject. We have opened the night to anyone interested in coming. So please make a special effort to attend & feel free to bring along as many friends as you like. The more the merrier, we want a really good turnout.

Rodney highway code ace Brian and Lee win

Despite a rather misty start, 21 riders, and one pillion, descended on Den and Sandras house to begin the day with a great egg, bacon or sausage bap, once again our thanks go to Den, Sandra and her helpers for this great start.

Brian had laid on a very enjoyable run, which this year was the same as last. Everyone was given a highway code questionaire, a route sheet and a voting slip to be completed at or before the mid day break.

The morning run took us through Bickleigh, Silverton, Broadclyst and on to Whimple, there was little for Ray and Gordon to do as rear marshals until about 50 yards from the lunchtime pub where Dens cub had to finish the ride with a push. The fault was a loose carb and we thought all was well.

Shirley waved her wand over the questionaires which led to Gordon and Rodney Hann having to complete another set of questions which Rod won, ( ex Police so he ought to didn't he ). The voting slips revealed that Lee won the girder vote on Charlies AJS and Brian Codey won the tele vote on his Bonnie, well done to you three.

The afternoon run lasted only a couple of hundred yards for Den, who elected to wait for pick up to home. Lee had a couple of minor hiccups but Charlie would have been proud how he got going again.

We all then finished up on Exmouth sea front for an ice cream drawing quite a lot of interest from passers by, it was nice to see Ken Alsop come down to see us all.

F.A.A. run, another picture

A further picture of our F.A.A. run has come to light, it is apparently a picture of a pilot flying his Buccaneer on to the carrier during our visit !, seems vaguely familiar though, not sure he should be handling this much extra horsepower.

F.A.A run 26th September

Nine of us assembled at the Junc 27 rest area and signed on in perfect weather for the run to the Fleet Air Arm museum at Yeovilton. Gordon offered a suggestion of three possible routes but all decided to follow him!.

We set off at 10.30 taking the B3181 towards Wellington, then

climbed up over the monument and on over the Blackdown hills until we arrived at the A303. Here we turned left and followed the A303 to the turning for the Museum.

We were parked in the car park, by attendents, where we found three of the Bristol section who had travelled down to be with us for the day, we also were met by a member of the South Dorset section.

Gordon did his best to try to get a few pounds off for a party of 13, but despite tears and begging, we had to pay normal ( o.a.p. ) rates, however, it was soon clear to us all that the visit was well worth the money as we had flights in helicopters onto a carrier and were able to see aircraft launch and be recovered, ( oh alright so it wasn't real but it certainly was made to feel like it ).

We all got back together at 15.00 and Gordon led a different route back through Huish Episcopi and Langport then Taunton where people began to break off for their respective trips home.

All in all a good day out in good weather, good routes, good company and a good venue

Fish and chip run 25th September

Seven fish and chip seekers braved the South Molton carnival night and met at the Honeycombe for a meal on Saturday 25th September despite having to walk a way from where they could park their cars. A good meal in convivial company was enjoyed by all, mind you some thought the band playing outside was for their benefit !.
The committee will try to avoid the carnival another time.

Girder Fork Run In August

The Girder Fork Run was on August 29th. We met at The Angel, Witheridge for a welcome cup of coffee. This run is, as you would guess, is for girder fork bikes only. Eleven girders forks turned up, however, many other club members were there to see them off.

Once again Bill chose the route around the Devon lanes, ending up at The Bell in Chittlehampton for lunch.

There is now a trophy for the best bike on the run which is chosen by the landlord of The Bell and his wife. This year they chose John Boyd's 1937 Rudge.

All they bikes completed the run, however, several had problems starting them for the homeward run!

July's Exmoor Run

The Exmoor Run was held on July 11th, meeting at Blackberries Hotel, Bampton at 10.30 leaving at 11.00. There was a very good turn out of bikes, 26 riders on what was a lovely summer's day. Peter Winch joined us, riding from Bristol to do the run on his 1982 Yamaha RS100. He obviously loves the Exmoor scenery!

The morning ride took us through the ford at Bury, always a popular bit, who's going to get wet feet? Of course there is always someone who goes mad! Then via Exton to the village of Winsford and on to Wheddon Cross. We went over Dunkery Beacon and down to Horner for a coffee stop at the National Trust cafe.

After coffee we rode back to the top of Exmoor and carried on along the coast road towards Lynton. We took a left turn down into the Brendon Valley, through Challacombe and Bratton Fleming heading for Barnstaple. Tea was calling us at Brenda's, she always feeds and waters us after the 65 mile run! Thanks again Brenda, it was lovely!

A good run blessed by good weather, lovely scenery and ending in a good tea, what more could anyone ask!

New VMCC Dartmoor Section

I just thought I would pass on the news that there is now a new section of the VMCC in south Devon. They are called the Dartmoor Section.

Devon is such a huge county that some members of the VMCC were finding it difficult to come to club meetings and some runs. So they decided to set up their own section covering the south of the county, (but open to all, as is ours.).

They will meet at The Welcome Stranger. Bickington, Torquay, TQ12 6JA. They held their first run called the Labyrinths Run on 29/08/10. Anyone who is interested in this section can ring Ian on 01647 252476.

Our evening runs 2010

There have been three evening rides this year other than the monthly meetings, Woody has mentioned the evening run to The Bell at Chittlehampton, since then we have had a run to The Three Tuns at Silverton on 26th July and a run to The Mitre at Witheridge on the 23rd August. In both cases about 9 machines turned up, it was nice to see John Brunyee at Silverton as well as people from 'the east'. At the Mitre, we took over an outside table where 'quality' jokes went the rounds ! - very enjoyable.

Ray & Chris' Return Trip To Wales

Ray & Chris made a return bike trip to Wales at the end of May/beginning of June. We were hoping for better weather this year, but it was still a very mixed bag. We had a bit of everything, but it definately wasn't as wet as last year!

We stayed the first three nights at Crickhowell in a B&B. The first day we visited Hay-on-Wye to have a look around & see the bookshops of course. The route was via the Vale of Ewyas and over the Gospel Pass. The following day we took a trip to the Brecon Mountain Railway, www.breconmountainrailway.co.uk & then on to the Dan-yr-Ogof showcaves, returning throught the Brecon Beacons National Park.

We moved on the next day to Pentre-ty-Gwyn, near Llandovery for four nights, visiting the castle at Carreg- Cennen on the way. This is spectacular and well worth the climb up to it, the views are terrific! www.carregcennencastle.com .The Dolaucothi Goldmines were our next stop where we went underground on the Roman Tour. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-dolaucothigoldmines .In the afternoon we traversed a spectacular, isolated mountain road from Tregaron to Abergwesyn. Not for the faint hearted! A really wet following day forced us into the Welsh National Botanic Gardens where we took shelter in the greenhouse!

Then on the last day, rather weary, we set off for home. I would recommend a trip to this area, lots of other bikers seemed to love it too, quiet roads & lots of good bends! We also had several meals in the Westend Cafe where bikers from all over the country seem to gather. www.westendcafe.co.uk . A good trip!

Next Club Run - August 29th

Our next club run is on Sunday August 29th. This run is for Girder Fork bikes only. No Teles on this one please! We are meeting at the "Angel" in Witheridge, gathering at 10.30 for a start at 11.00.

The lunch stop will be at the "Bell" in Chittlehampton, as usual, where the landlord will choose the bike to be awarded the Ron Ley Memorial Cup.

June's Events

There were three club events in June. The first was the Ron Ley Run on June 13th. This is always a popular run, taking in some stunning scenery. We started at Cullompton Services on the M5, 13 of us led by Gordon over the Blackdown Hills, taking in lunch at a farm shop. Dave Heywood unfortunately had a break down with his sparking plug insert blowing out. We all made our own way home, with four of us returning to Tiverton.

June 15th was a "Ride Your Bike" club night gathering at the Town Arms, South Molton.

We had an evening meeting on June 21st at the "Bell Inn", Chittlehampton. A nice pub, well known for it's good food. A pint and a natter was enjoyed by all.

June was a lovely month weather wise and we all made the most of it.

Sorry I have been absent for a while, but life has been extremely busy recently. I will be catching up with the club events of the summer from now on.

We have had good runs and club nights this year. June was glorious weather but the same can't be said about July and August. Never mind that's England for you! We always enjoy ourselves despite the weather. What a hardy bunch!

At 9.00am on Ilfracombe Sea Front with grey skies and a cold strong cold wind blowing from the north, the probability of a poor turn-out looked likely.

But the expectation was wrong. Fifty riders signed-on and the weather improved greatly with long spells of sunshine in the afternoon.

There was only one breakdown that I know of, when one of the gentlemen from Dorset's battery expired.

Maurice Ley once again arranged the route which differed from that used last year with a longer run in the morning. This proved to be very popular with many favourable comments passed both to Maurice and to me.

It was pleasing to see entrants from Somerset, Dorset, Cornwall and Devon riding in what has become a very popular run, taking in as it does, some of the finest scenery in the South West.

John Morey won the " Oldest Bike and Rider" award with his 1928 Scott.

The "Rider's Choice of Machine" award went to Richard Gardiner for his lovely Indian Chief.

We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Ilfracambe Mr Philip Webb and his wife, who picked the 1935 Sunbeam of Maurice Ley for his "Mayors Choice of Machine" award.

The "Guest's Choice" Award, chosen this year by John Brunyee, was also awarded to Maurice.

Next Two Events

We have two events coming up soon. The first, on Sunday May 2nd, is the Founder's Day Relay Rally. Devon have two Check points this year, one at The Thatched Inn at Abbotsham and one at the Trout Inn, Bickleigh, near Tiverton. Both check points are open from 9.30 am till 5.00pm. Refreshments and toilets are available at both locations.

The second event is the annual Scrumpy Run. This starts and finishes at Ilfracombe on May 9th, 10.30 am for 11.00 am start. Entry forms can be had from Ray Rowcliffe on 01884 253166 or you can enter on the day. Maurice has arranged a new route for this year which will take us through Woody Bay and the Valley of the Rocks. We had about 50 bikes take part last year and we hope and expect a similar number this year. This run is widely regarded as one of the finest in the South West.

This run was very well attended with 34 bikes lining up for the start at the Corn Dolly in South Molton. The Cornish contingent arrived just in time for the off after an enforced stop at Roundswell to replace a broken throttle cable on Clive's Triumph Tiger 750.

Organised by John Denny, the well planned route took us through places that other routes cannot reach. From South Molton to Black Cat and Exebridge then through the lanes to Shillingford. On to Wiveliscombe then north to Watchet and on to the lunch stop in Blue Anchor.

After lunch we had an enjoyable ride to the finish at Black Cat. The route took us through Dunster and Weddon Cross, then, at Merve's request, to Winsford in order to go though the ford.

No breakdowns occured on the run but Cyril had some trouble starting his Matchless.

I must give praise to the lads from Cornwall. Those from Bodmin and Wadebridge covered 250 miles but Clive from Troon clocked up 290 miles in all. Added to this they had to make repeated stops when Roger's mag end cap kept coming loose.

SPRING RUN 2010

Most people had a chilly ride to the start at Whiddon Down despite the sunshine. Winter was still hanging on.

After a coffee and a chat in the cafe however the weather began to warm up. A good field of 27 bikes started and finished the run with no problems at all.

It was good to see a large contingent from Cornwall. Some of whom had ridden all the way from Newquay

Another fine route from Ray lead us through Chagford then up onto Dartmoor and over to Widecombe in the Moor. From here we travelled over the moors to Bovey Tracey, a splendid road with fine moorland views.

We managed to get to Bovey about mid-day and so avoided the Mothering Sunday rush.After a leisurely lunch we made our way, via Mortonhampstead, back to the finish at Whiddon Down. A great start to this years calendar!

Devon Section AGM

The next club night is on March 18th at The Town Inn, South Molton. This will be the third evening held at our new venue. Both previous meetings have been well attended with attendees enjoying themselves so much they have been slow to leave at the end of the evening. Great!

This month it is the AGM and we hope that as many members as possible will attend, as this is the opportunity for you to put your suggestions and questions to the committee.

Spring Run

I hope you all have your bikes ready for the coming riding season which starts with the Spring Run on Sunday week, March the 14th.

We are starting from Whiddon Down Services, setting off at 11.00am. Ray has arranged a route around Dartmoor with a Pub lunch stop. If the route is as good as last year, and the weather is not as bad, it should be a good day out.

New Tabards

The section has had new tabards produced, as shown. As you can see they are the zip-up type, not velcro fastened. They have a special pocket for a mobile phone plus two pockets for the usual junk that motorcyclists carry. Offering good value at £10, the first batch was all sold at the last club night. We now have some more in stock in sizes L, XL,and 2XL. These will be on sale at the March run on March 14th and at the AGM on March 18th.

Another very cold New Year's day discouraged all but the most hardy riders from making the brave effort to ride this year. Only four riders started the run, but eight supporters turned up to wish them well and enjoy a coffee and a chat.

The roads were icy in places but no one had any trouble on the run. Mick however, came off his Bantam twice on the way to the start due to the conditions.

The lunch stop was, as last year, the Bell Inn at Chittlehampton, where a warm welcome and a fine lunch can always be found.

New Venue for Club Meetings

In an effort to attract a greater number of members to Thursday night club meetings, a new venue has been arranged. We will now be meeting at The Town Inn, South Molton.This is located half way along the main street. We will of course still hold the meetings on the third Thursday of the month.

The new venue offers a comfortable meeting room and more secure parking for your bikes.

The first meeting is on January 21st for a natter night.

Devon Section Annual Dinner

The Dinner was held again this year at The Fingle Glen Golf Club. Forty-five people attended, and most enjoyed the excellent meal. It was just a little unfortunate that the last table had to have beef as the kitchens had run out of turkey.

We are most grateful to Ray's grandaughter Donna for presenting the awards which were awarded as follows:

Guy Fawkes Run Report

After a night of heavy rain and gale force winds the omens for our run did not look promising. But the rain belt passed on and the wind eased to leave a blustery but dry, overcast morning.

Eleven hardy members signed on at The Corn Dolly coffee shop in South Molton. The route this year was to visit the three villages of George Nympton, Kings Nympton and Bishops Nympton, finishing at lunchtime at the Red Lion in Chulmleigh. Nympton is an Anglo-Saxon name that comes from NYM, which is thought to be the old name for the River Mole, and TON which is a small settlement. George, King and Bishop where the respective Lords of the Manor.

The route was very much off the beaten track and took the riders up and over some quite high hills, which afforded some fine views over the surrounding countryside.

I am pleased to report that there were no mishaps despite there being lots of leaves and plenty of mud on the roads.

I am sorry there is only one photo but Merve and I forgot to bring our cameras. Gordon took the only photo of someones grotty Tryumf !

The next run will be the New Year's day run which this year falls on the 1st of January. It starts at The Angel in Witheridge, 10.30 for 11.00am. If it's too cold for you, then come for a coffee and chat and see the bikes off.

Guy Fawkes Run

Our next run is the Guy Fawkes Run which starts at The Corn Dolly in South Molton on November 1st, arriving at 10.30 for an 11.00am start.

Please note that the run is on the first Sunday in the month and not the second as is our usual date.

We hope for a good turn out and better weather than we had last year. This is the last run of the year so make the most of it!

Autumn Run

I was unable to take part in the Autumn run this year and neither was Gordon. I can only report what I have been told of the run. It seems that everyone had a good day despite the fact that one rider deserted his post before the tail end marshals arrived. The run finished at Exmouth where large portions of icecream were consumed.

Autumn Run

This Sunday, October 11th, we have the Autumn Run. Breakfast will kindly be provided at the start by Den and Sandra at their house in Jockey Hill, Crediton. We need to arrive by 10.30am for the 11.00am start.

This is always an interesting run, organised each year by Brian. During the lunch stop we will be holding the Highway Quiz competition for the Woodman Family Shield. As Gordon is unable to attend this year, the Shield will definately be going to somebody new, after 40 years!

Lets hope for some sunny Autumn weather and a good turnout.

Bovington Run

On a fine but chilly late September morning eleven members of the Devon section set off for Bovington where the world famous Tank Museum is located. Travelling by way of Honiton a stop was made at Bridport for coffee where some members from the Dorset section joined the run.

Led by the Dorset boys we continued on a very pleasant route using roads that were new to most of us.

After lunch in the museum cafe the party split up with some staying to see the tanks whilst the rest went on to visit the grave of Lawrence of Arabia at Moreton cemetery in Dorset, and then to the location of his fatal accident. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._E._Lawrence .

I myself stayed and spent an interesting two hours viewing the many exhibits on display in the museum.

The day was enjoyed by all who went, with no breakdowns, although Roger from Cornwall had some trouble when his magneto came loose.

Extra Run for Calendar

The committee has added an extra run to the calendar for this year.

The Bovington Tank Museum will be the destination on Sunday September 27th. The start will be at The Little Chef, Sampford Peverell, at Junction 27 of the M5 motorway, 9 for 9.30am start. This promises to be an interesting and enjoyable day out. Check out the website - http://www.tankmuseum.org/ .

The 3 Tors Run.

On what turned out to be a hot, sunny day twelve riders signed in for the 9 am start at Okehampton Station. As the Buffet did not open until 9 am the start was delayed for 30 mins so we could have our usual pre-start coffee. This also allowed the three riders from Cornwall to meet up with us. They had been delayed by a broken clutch cable on Roger's BSA at Lifton. After a brief chat the Devon lads set off for Brown Willy on Bodmin Moor, whilst the three from Cornwall made their way to High Willhays on Dartmoor.

A brief stop was made at Brown Willy car park for refreshments and photos before resuming the ride.

From Bodmin Moor to Dunkery Beacon on Exmoor is about 70 miles, so most riders stopped for lunch somewhere on this stretch. John Boyde and I stopped at Landacre Bridge near Exeford for a picnic and by chance met my daughter and her family there.

On this occasion the only Tors that was climbed was Dunkery as climbing all three is a task for much younger folk than us!

Everyone on the run who expressed an opinion said they had had a good day and that they were pleased to see the run reintroduced to the Club calendar.

As this is a very long run only a suggested route was issued, with riders free to make their own choices. This worked very well and the field broke onto three separate groups, each going their own way for parts of the ride and meeting up at each of the Tors.

I received word later from the Cornish contingent that they arrived home at 7.45pm after a ride of 215 miles.

Girder fork run 30th August 2009

A very good show of 14 riders lined up in light drizzle at the start of the 2009 girder fork run at Witheridge on Sunday 30th August, unfortunately, Den's little James was on show only having decided to throw a bit of clutch trouble just before the start. 13 bikes then left to follow Bill with Ray and Brian bringing up the rear. The mornings route took us to Nomansland before heading off the main road towards Witheridge moor. A good variation of roads took us to South Molton and then on to Filleigh and finally to Chittlehampton for our lunch stop. We were made very welcome at the pub and the usual excellent meal was served though the helpings of chips proved more that some could manage, so others had to help out!. A few bikes had developed problems in the morning and at the lunch stop, Rays Ariel that I was riding was having a fling out the oil day and his NG Ariel lost its front brake screw and developed a slow puncture in the rear tyre. John Crispins Rudge lost oil somewhere on route and Tony had clutch troubles. There were one or two other reasons such that only 5 bikes restarted from Chittlehampton, I don't think I can remember such a large bail out half way round before. The afternoon run was uneventful and the 5 riders finished successfully at Winkleigh. It was interesting to note the initial line up for the day had such a range of engines from Dens little James right up to Rods 1000cc Vin, nice to know we can still field 14 girders in the section, it was also nice to see a Harley of 750cc on the run, the rider tells me that it was originally a military bike, following him was like watching an organist in full flow as it had a foot clutch and hand gear change!. Thanks must go to Bill and Brian for the route which had a bit of everything, it was just unfortunate that so many bikes had problems this year , though nothing major, even Bills trusty Norton played up at Winkleigh and required a plug from Brian to get started again. My thanks to Ray for letting me ride his Ariel even though I spent all day looking for that extra cylinder and waiting for an 'expert' to start it!.

August Evening Meet

With fine evenings being a rarity in Devon this summer we felt we were in luck on Monday as the sun had shone for most of the day. Our luck held until we reached the meeting venue at 'The Mitre', in Witheridge. The Mitre turned out to be a very pleasant country pub where we were made most welcome by the landlord. Most of us had timed the ride right and were in the bar by the time a very heavy shower came along. Nineteen riders turned out and had a most enjoyable evening. A dry ride home made for a very pleasant evening's motorcycling.

Forthcoming Events

The Club night on August 20th is "Ride your bike night". After the very poor response on the last one lets hope we can do better this month.

On Monday August 24th at 7.30 we have an evening meet at Witheridge. The Angel will be closed so we will meet in the other pub on the square which I believe is called The Mitre. There is only one other pub so you can't go wrong.

The next Club run after the Girder Fork Run is on Sept. 13th. This is the Three Tors Run, resurrected after many years off the calendar. We will be starting at Okehampton Railway Station at the earlier time of 9.00am. This is a very long run, visiting the three highest Tors on Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor. There will be no drop-off system. Instead riders will be issued a route-map and invited to make their own way in groups or individually, as they prefer. There will be no designated lunch stop so bring a packed lunch or use one of the many pubs along the route.

Ron Ley Run

Riders from the four counties arrived at Atlantic Village for the start of this run, twenty-five members all told, with one or two regulars unable to attend.

Early cloud soon cleared as we made our way along the A39 for the turn off to Shop and the coast road down to Bude. This was where Graham's Norton developed a fault, so he headed back home. On the way he lost power completely and had to stop. As luck would have it a farmer saw his plight and took him back to home in his trailer.

Sticking to the coast roads we passed along Widemouth Bay then took the Crackington Haven road for a brief stop on the cliff-top overlooking the bay. The road then becomes quite interesting as it leads down into the hamlet of Millook via a 1 in 3, and out the other side and then up a 1 in 4. We then moved on to Crackington Haven where lots of visitors were enjoying some rare sunshine. Another 1 in 4 took us from here up onto the coastal road and eventually down to Boscastle for the lunch stop at the Napoleon Inn. The Inn serves very good meals at reasonable prices.

After lunch we headed back inland for a very relaxed ride by way of Slauterbridge and Egloskerry to the end of the run at Launceston Steam Railway. www.launcestonsr.co.uk . This place is well worth a visit. As well as the cafe and shop in the old station there is a one and a half mile train ride which is soon to be extened for a further two miles. There is also a free museum containing stationary engines, railway memorabilia and some vintage motocycles.

Evening meet Silverton July 27th

9 bikes made the trip to the Three Tuns pub at Silverton on a cloudy evening for a meet. We were pleased to see 2 riders who we had not met before, one was a vmcc member from Seaton and the other from Silverton itself. The bikes attracted quite a bit of interest in the car park outside. 4 of the bikes came from Tiverton and all rode out together, the beauty of these evenings are that we get a ride from our respective homes, some on our own, and some with friends, to chose our own way to the meet and a different route if you want to on the way back. The next evening run out this year will be on the 24th August and will be at the Angel, Witheridge, I would urge anyone to join in to make these run outs a success and give yourselves a good run into the bargain, very often, our old bikes quite like the cooler air that prevails at this time of the day and go just that little bit better.

The Devon Section Runs for August.

Our next Run will be the Ron Ley Run, which will be on Sunday the 9th of August. Assemble in the top car park of Atlantic Village for a start time of 11.00am. Lots of fine scenery down the coasts of Devon and Cornwall. A pub lunch stop in Boscastle and finishing with a cup of tea at Launceston Steam Railway.

On August the 23rd it will be time to dust off your Girder fork bike for the annual Girder Fork Run run starting from The Angel Inn at Witheridge. The run has been organised again this year by Bill R. and is due off at 11.00am. I will be there to sign on the girder fork boys and will then go on a run down to Lifton, as some of us did last year. If anybody cares to join me they would be most welcome.

A wet week in Wales.

This rather wet little break was not an official Vintage Club event, but just something that came out of a discussion between Ray, Keith and myself.

The plan was to leave home on Tuesday morning, and ride to Builth Wells. Wednesday we would travel on to Betws-y-Coed and Thursday head back to Crickhowell. Friday would see us heading back home. The route was planned using the AA book of "Best

Drives-Britain" It promised to be a very scenic drive taking in lots of minor roads over the mountains of Mid and North Wales.

Our overnight stops were in B&B's sourced over the Internet.

What we could not have forseen was the constant heavy rain which pretty much dogged the whole trip except for Wednesday afternoon. We had decided to avoid motorways where possible so opted for the A38 to reach Bristol and via Aust to the old Severn bridge where we stopped for lunch. The rain mostly held off then so we had a pleasant ride up the Wye valley to Monmouth. Then I missed a direction sign and we got a bit lost for a few miles but the scenery was nice so it wasn't too problematic. Then the rain started again. We arrived at Builth Wells in a thunderstorm after riding the last twenty miles in an absolute downpour. Our landlord very kindly allowed us the use of his garage to stow the bikes and hang up our wet kit.

On Wednesday the rain started to clear by mid morning and we had a good days riding with superb views from the high roads in the Cambrian Mountains. By the time we arrived at Betws-y-Coed the sun was out and my nose had got quite burnt.

Thursday morning we had the pleasure of riding on dry roads for the first five miles but as we started the climb to Blaenau Ffestiniog so the rain started again. So heavily in fact that we were forced to take shelter under some trees until the worst had past. Intermittent rain the whole day turned into a deluge for the final twenty miles. Ray said he had never before ridden in such heavy rain. Once again the landlord allowed us to use his garage and his good wife let us put our wet garments in her drying cupboard.

Despite the rain, which persisted the whole way home, we enjoyed the trip very much. The mountain roads, which carried little or no traffic, were most enjoyable with steep hills, sharp bends and sudden drops. The scenery, when you could take your eyes of the road, was magnificent.

We returned by way of the old Severn bridge and along the A38 to Taunton where Ray and Keith made for Tiverton and I headed for Bideford via the B3227. Just to round the trip off I had another puncture in the rear tyre as I approached Wivaliscombe. So my trip ended in the back of a breakdown van. I am pleased to say that Ray and Keith got home without further incident. I am still trying to dry out my gloves however!

The Exmoor Run

Eighteen riders set out on the Run from the start venue at Quinces Honey Farm, South Molton. We were pleased to see Mick Glossop who had travelled from Newquay on his very smart 1938 Royal Enfield model K V-twin.

A little rain at the start soon cleared away as we made our way up on to Exmoor using the same route as the April Fool's run. This time we stopped at Malmsmead for coffee.

I say we stopped when in truth I mean the rest of the group, for I had a rear tyre puncture whilst crossing Brendon Common.

Mike Kidd lent me an inner tube and Brian Chidgey a pump, so I set about getting mobile again.

Unfortunately the pump failed to deliver air to the tyre, so I had to ring for assistance and was told I would receive help within 90 mins.

Just as I finished on the phone a kind Japanese Gentleman asked if I was in trouble. I explained my need for a pump. whereupon he produced an electric one and together we completed the repair in short order.

Then I had to settle down and await the breakdown wagon as the credit on my phone had expired and I had no way to cancel it. It arrived at 12.05, 90mins after the phone call.

From Malmsmead the route led to Brendon, then over the East Lyn river and up to the A39, then down Countisbury Hill to Lynmouth. Then a fairly fast section followed on A and B roads past Blackmoor Gate and Mullacott Cross leading down to the delightfully picturesque Lee Bay.

Everyone continued via back roads again to Morthoe with fine views of the coast, and down in to Woolacombe.Then on through Georgeham, Croyde, Saunton and Braunton, to Barnstaple and tea.

I believe everyone enjoyed the run but Gordon had some trouble with misfiring and had to return by a different route.

A big THANK YOU must go to Brenda who once again laid on a superb tea.

Devon Sections next run is the Exmoor Run on July 12th. Start time is 11.00am from the Quince Honey Farm at South Molton. Coffee is available in their cafe.

There will be no lunch stop on this run but we will stop for coffee at Malmsmead.

The run finishes in Barnstaple where Brenda has kindly agreed to supply her usual sumptuous tea.

A new route has been planned which takes in areas of North Devon not visited by us before. Reliable brakes are a "must have " item on this run. Petrol will be available en route.

We are hoping for a good turn out and a fine days riding.

Social Run 14th June 2009

24 riders and 2 passengers met at the Black cat on Sunday June 14th for the annual social run. We were all treated to tea / coffee and toast for which we have to thank Fred and his wife. The route which had been organised by Ray and Gordon, set off promptly at 11.00 after Keith had had to retire with missfiring and Roy had to be bump started. Brian and Gordon brought up the rear but were only needed twice during the event as it mainly passed without incident. The route took in Withypool and Winsford, ( I think everyone went through the ford, ) before arriving at Timberscombe where 16 riders enjoyed the excellent dinner. The afternoon run was through Langley Marsh and Wiveliscombe then we arrived at Chelston house, the care home where Jean Rowcliffe, Ray's wife, resides. Everyone at the home came out to see the bikes, some of the residents were keen to tell us of their motorcycling days. The riders were gratefully thanked, fed and watered!, before departing home as and when they felt they should. A good day with excellent weather, good company and the satisfaction of knowing that our bikes had been used to give a little pleasure to Jean and her fellow residents.

Cornwall section's Lands End Run

If you are looking for a good LONG run with fine scenery and weather to match, then the Cornwall Section's Lands End Run is for you.

Starting at Bodmin Station on June 7th the first bike leaves at 9.40am. The route winds its way to the north coast, which it then follows along to St Ives. Then its on via the northern road through Treen and St Just to Land's End.

The scenery is magnificent (second only to Devon, of course!) and a warm welcome awaits you with coffee at the Bodmin Station cafe.

The run is a long one of around 120 miles, but you can rest and recover during a lengthy lunch stop at the Portreath Arms Hotel after 78 miles.

I have taken part in this Run for the past two years and have entered again this year. You can appreciate how much I enjoy this run by the fact that I have a 50 mile trip to the start and a 100 mile ride home at the end. Other riders come from even further afield.

Social Run

Devon Section's next run is the Social Run which starts at Black Cat, near Bampton, on June 14th. 10.30am for 11.00am start. A route of about 60 miles with a pub lunch. As the man said "Always a good day out".

The Scrumpy Run

The Weather Gods were kind to us this year when they provided an abundance of sunshine for Devon's annual Scrumpy Run. Over sixty riders signed on for a days motorcycling on Exmoor.

Soon after 9am bikes began arriving at Ilfracombe sea front where they lined up to await the 11am start. They were much admired by delighted holiday makers and locals, many of whom welcomed the chance to talk to the owners and take photographs.

From Ilfracombe the route took the riders to Coombe Martin and the dreaded Shoot Lane which leads steeply up to Knap Down and on to Stony Corner where a left turn led them across Trentishoe Down. Then came Hunter's Inn and the second 1 in 4 climb up to Martinhoe for the ride through the woods at Woody Bay and the Lee Abbey toll road. On through the beautiful Valley of the Rocks and down from Lynton to Lynmouth. The next 1 in 4 hill out of Lynmouth is Countisbury, at the top of which the Blue Ball Inn provided a welcome break for lunch.

After lunch the route took the riders through more fabulous Exmoor scenery before returning to Ilfracombe sea front. Here the bikes were lined up once more to await the presentation of awards by the Mayor of Ilfracombe.

Steve Griffen collected two awards for his eye catching 1950 BSA B31, one as the entrants choice and one as the choice of a special guest, this year it was Carol Hann. Rodney Han is the Club's area rep.

The "Mayors Choice of Machine" award went to 92 year old John Brunyee with his Cammy Velo.

85 year old Charlie Plain took the award for the "Highest Combined Age of Bike and Rider" with his 1926 AJS.

And yes they did both complete the run on their bikes!

Our thanks is due to the Committee for all the work entailed in organising this great day out.

The first ever Scrumpy Run started from Sidwell Street in Exeter in 1973. Some forty-five entrants took part in the run which, by a roundabout route, took them to the lunch stop at Colyton where this photo was taken.

Later Scrumpy Runs started at Ilfracombe. Initially the machines were lined up by the putting green in front of the Pavillion. However, as numbers increased the parade was moved to the promanade in front of the old Pavillion where it is still held, although the old Pavillion has now been removed.This photo shows Eric Lewis chatting to Les Rowcliffe and his son Ray by the putting green.

The Devon Section's famous Scrumpy Run is the next run. It is on May 10th, meeting on Ilfracombe seafront from 10.15 a.m. moving off at 11.00 a.m. See the "Scrumpy Run" post below for more information.

We hope as many of you as possible will come along and support it, its always a great day out. The run is open to both individuals and members of other clubs, all are welcome. We are keeping our fingers crossed for some nice weather!

April Fools Run

Easter Sunday dawned bright and sunny with light winds.The omens looked good for a fine days riding on Exmoor.

Starting from the Corn Dolly in South Molton, where we are always sure of a warm welcome and a good cup of coffee, twenty one riders set off over the moors.

The first section of our ride took us though lanes that are, at this time of the year, festooned with daffodils and primroses, to North Molton Ridge and Sandyway Cross.Then we began the steady climb up to Fyldon Common which, at nearly 500 metres high, offers a fine view to the west where Appledore could clearly be seen 18 miles away. At Kingsford Gate we turned right to meander down in to Simonsbath. Then on the B3223 for the climb back up onto the Moor at Blackpitts Gate and across to Brendon Barton where a right turn led along a narrow road with gradients of 1 in 4 both up and down to Malmsmead

At Malmsmead we (that is most of us) crossed Badgworthy Water via the ford and headed east, passing Oare Church of Lorna Doone fame and over Robbers Bridge. We left this pretty valley by way of a testing 1 in 4 hill with a very steep hairpin bend. At the top we joined the A39 for the spectacular ride across Porlock Common, with a clear view across the Severn Estuary to Wales, and down in to Porlock. Here riders made their own arrangments for lunch in some of the eating places available in this picturesque village.

After lunch riders made their own way home, some going east, some west, whilst some went south, back across the Moor to Simonsbath for a cup of tea.

The Scrumpy Run

The Valley of the Rocks

Once again the Devon Section is pleased to invite riders of machines over 25 years old to participate in its popular Scrumpy Run.

This year the run is to be held on May 10th starting as usual on Ilfracombe sea front at 11am.

The Doone Valley

The run, which passes through some of the finest scenery in the England, will this year, revert to the original route through Woody Bay and The Valley of the Rocks. The lunch stop will be at the Blue Ball Inn which is at the top of the famous 1 in 4 Countisbury Hill. The afternoon route winds it's way across Exmoor with its spectacular views and famous landmarks.

Prize giving takes place back in Ilfracombe at around 4pm. After which riders are invited to take tea in the pavillion by kind courtesy of Ilfracombe Council.

At the start of the April Fool's run 2008 the members rode to Barnstaple to visit Molly Chugg. Molly is the widow of Ron Chugg who was for many years one of the stalwarts of the Devon section.

Spring Run March 8th

On a day when most sane folks were at home by the fire, the Devon section held its Spring Run. High winds and heavy showers did not deter 17 members from gathering at The Little Chef ,Whiddon Down for the monthly club run. There was a slight delay at the start caused firstly by a lost key and then by Tony's Vincent shedding its kick-start, and than we were off . Passing through the pretty village of Chagford we climbed on to Dartmoor amongst low cloud and heavy rain showers. A scenic downhill run past Hameldown Tor and Blackaton Down brought us to Widecombe- In- The-Moor and a comfort stop. A short wait here while Maurice fixed the exhaust system on his Sunbeam and then on though the rain past Haytor to the Riverside Inn at Bovey Tracey for the lunch stop.

After a good lunch and a warm-up we were all pleased to see that the rain had cleared away though strong winds still persisted.From Bovey we enjoyed a good run back through Mortonhampsted to Widdon Down where the run finished.

Our thanks go to Ray and Gordon for a cracking route and a good day out despite the weather.

New Year's Day Run 2009

So,here we go again another year to look forward to. Some members are still hibernating, but a few hardy types ( six in total ),braved the bitter cold of the first day of 2009 to reach the start at the Angel, Witheridge. After a very welcome cup or two of coffee the magnificent six set off for the lunch venue at Chittlehampton. Mike Dixon told me he was the coldest he had ever been on a bike. Britain is proud of you all.

The next Club run is on March 8th, starting and finishing at The Little Chef, Whiddon Down. Organised by Ray and Gordon, gathering at 10.30 for 11.00 start. We shall all hope for better weather.
